Experts from Which? tested and reviewed a range of popular barbecues, comparing their ease of building, grilling temperature, ease of clean-up, and food quality.
The question Britons love a barbie. Apparently 90 per cent of UK households own outdoor cooking kit, with the market valued at £1.75 billion. (It’s also estimated that the average Brit eats more than 3,000 calories at a single barbecue.
Though let’s not dwell on that. ) Anyway, the choice is dizzying – charcoal or gas, disposable or permanent – and, when John Lewis’s most expensive BBQ costs £5,699, how much should we spend? The basics Which? tested dozens of barbecues – the cheapest was a £15 charcoal grill from Argos and the priciest was a Weber £1,299 gas cooker.
The method First, the pros at Which? assembled each product to see how quick – and how easy – it was to build, then they timed how long it took for it to reach grilling temperature. They also deployed an independent professional chef, who cooked various foods on each one and rated the results. After cooking, the team gave each BBQ a deep clean – assessing how easy it was to remove fat and leftover food.

This tiny-but-tough barbecue is light enough to take to the park and, for a charcoal grill, it heats quickly.
The chef said it produced nicely cooked food; testers found it easy to assemble and clean. What’s the catch? The grill diameter is 37cm, which can cook enough food for three to four people at once. Bigger groups beware.
BEST PORTABLE Cadac Safari Chef 30 LP Deluxe RRP £140 Shop Type Gas Weight 3kg Grill size 28cm in diameter Heating time 2 mins What works? A lot. This heats up at pace and is properly portable. It’s also easy to clean, cooks well, and the lid can double as a pan or wok.
Nifty! What’s the catch? Again, the cooking area is small. As with all gas BBQs you need to buy a gas canister (they’re around £10 and one size fits all), but this product also comes without the necessary gas regulator (an extra £15).
BEST BLOWOUT Everdure by Heston Blumenthal Force 2-Burner From £275 Shop Type Gas Weight 31kg Grill size 2,440 sq cm Heating time 4-6 mins What works? This is for serious chefs. Testers found it cooked top-quality food, and they liked its special nozzle to control the temperature. It’s very easy to clean (grease collects in a removable tray) and has a huge grill size.
What’s the catch? It’s heavy; you’re not going to want to move it around
