Brittany Moulton is using her voice to give other domestic violence victims the courage to break free.
- Brittany Moulton ’s scars are a reminder of the attack that left her beaten so badly she couldn’t file her own protection order. But the scars in no way define the person she is.
“I remember hearing the doctors say that it’s going to take you a year or more to recover, but at the end of the day, God was my doctor and he has the last say,” Moulton said. “I’m hoping that I touch the next victim,” Moulton said. An attack in February 2025 put her in the hospital for 14 days and changed her life forever. Criminal investigators say she was beaten with a hammer.
According to law enforcement, Moulton’s alleged attacker was Latarius Mylik Dale, who faces a first-degree domestic violence charge. Moulton said she had previously been in a relationship with Dale and they share a child together, but she said they were separated at the time of the attack.
“I heard two footsteps. I can’t get the two footsteps out of my head...all I could see is a black figure. He was dressed in all black and at that time that was my worst fear someone breaking in on me,” Moulton said.
“I just remember yelling after that first hit. I remember yelling and saying no and he hit me again. The same spot, and I was out. Knocked me out,” Moulton said.
“God said, ‘Girl, you need to get outside,’” Moulton said. “I heard Him clear as day. Like, from the right side, I heard it and I just remember thinking, looking up, ‘I hear you. ’ So I walked outside.
I walked to my neighbor’s yard. Knocked on her door, and she didn’t answer. So, I just remember saying, ‘I’m tired,’ and I fell out in the yard. ”Brittany Moulton was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham on a medical aircraft after being allegedly attacked by Latarius Mylik Dale.
“I have a metal plate inside of my head. I was sewn up from ear to ear. So my whole head, the top of my head is just full of scars and my retinas were torn in my right eye. I can’t see anything out of my right eye,” Moulton said.
In 2023, authorities charged Dale with a third-degree domestic violence charge, a misdemeanor that doesn’t carry prison time, but Moulton asked the judge to drop the charge.
“I was like, ‘We’re raising kids together. Let me go drop these charges. ’ And that’s what I told the judge. When he asked me, ‘Is he making you do this?
Is anyone making you do this? ’ I said, ‘No, we’re raising kids together and we’ll get it together one day,’” Moulton said. She eventually left and then went back to the relationship, but in November 2024, she finally walked away for good. Dale sits behind bars.
A fairly new Alabama law named Aniah’s Law allowed a judge to deny his bond. It’s named after a woman who was murdered by a man out on bail for prior violent crimes. Brittany Moulton was rushed to UAB Hospital in Birmingham on a medical aircraft after being allegedly attacked by Latarius Mylik Dale.
“It did give me a sense of relief,” Brittany said. “In the back of my head back then, I would say that if he was able, he would have finished the job,” Moulton said. While the road to recovery has never been easy, Moulton said she has even found it in her heart to forgive her alleged attacker.
“I felt a move from God to get out of that hole and forgive him,” Moulton said. “God’s rebranding not only me, but I hope for him as well. ” While the road to recovery has never been easy, Brittany Moulton said she has even found it in her heart to forgive her alleged attacker.
April Lyons, a survivor herself and the shelter coordinator at the House of Ruth, a domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center and shelter, said Moulton’s story is one she sees far too often.
“I’m so proud that the House of Ruth was able to help her financially get into a safe place of her own, because that’s all that survivors want. They want to live free and healthy, away from abuse,” Lyons said.
“Just knowing you’re not alone and knowing there’s someone that you can call... ” Lyons said.
“I have three children to raise. And I don’t want anyone else to raise them. I want to be the one to raise them. God gave them to me,” Moulton said.
“Don’t ever get to a point in your life to think, ‘I can’t do this. I can’t leave. I can’t do it financially on my own. ’ Because you can.
Get deep in the Word of God and He will give you all the resources and He will keep His promises to you. So, do it for your children and for yourself,” Moulton said.
