Dothan police shot Antonio King Sunday after authorities said he fired at officers following a standoff at a downtown home.
DOTHAN, Ala. -After police shot Antonio Christopher King—culminating a tense standoff with officers—paramedics rushed him to a Dothan hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting happened after police responded to a call from a concerned citizen who said they saw a man armed with a gun walking behind Vaughn Towers, a multi-story apartment complex on South Saint Andrews Street late Sunday. Police said that when an officer arrived on what appeared to be a routine call, King fired, forcing the officer to return fire.

After a series of loud bangs—not gunfire—police said King, 45, came out of the home and fired at officers again. Officers returned fire. No officers were wounded.
Dothan Police Public Information Officer Lieutenant Scott Owens did not reveal tactics used to coax King out. A large, several block area of downtown Dothan was blocked off as Dothan police work to secure the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation, as a matter of policy, will examine the shooting and present its findings to Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman, who will decide whether to present the case to a grand jury, though charges against police are highly unlikely.
