People with irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS ) face a new challenge as recent research suggests that commonly prescribed medications, including antidepressants and anti-diarrheals, may increase mortality risk .
The study, published in Communications Medicine, analyzed data from over 600,000 individuals across 106 U.S. healthcare organizations, spanning up to 15 years. It found an association between antidepressant use in all IBS subtypes and higher mortality, though the exact causes of death remain unclear.
Additionally, anti-diarrheal drugs like diphenoxylate and loperamide were linked to increased risk specifically in IBS-D patients. Experts, including pharmacist Reshma Kapadia Patel and gastroenterologist David Kahana, emphasize that while the findings are concerning, they do not warrant immediate discontinuation of prescribed medications. Instead, they recommend regular reviews with healthcare providers to assess treatment efficacy and safety, especially for long-term use. The study highlights potential risks such as disruptions in gut-brain communication, heart function, or electrolyte balance due to these medications.
However, the data is observational, meaning it does not establish causation. Both Patel and Kahana stress the importance of exploring non-pharmacological treatments, such as dietary modifications, probiotics, and lifestyle changes, to manage IBS symptoms effectively. They note that IBS is closely tied to diet, gut-brain interactions, and lifestyle factors, suggesting that avoiding trigger foods like dairy, processed items, and spicy foods can significantly improve symptoms. Supplements like fiber and digestive enzymes may also enhance digestive health.
