A 45-year-old woman was arrested in Emery County after leading troopers on a lengthy car chase, reaching speeds of up to 130 miles per hour and prompting an interstate closure. Utah Highway Patrol said a trooper was patrolling I-70 near milepost 158 in Monticello shortly before 5:20 p.
m. Wednesday, April 9, when he observed a westbound vehicle traveling 120 miles per hour. The trooper activated his emergency lights and siren. Several miles later, near milepost 141, the trooper caught up with the vehicle. Official documents stated the suspect, later identified as Annamae Cabalsa Martinez, saw the patrol vehicle trying to stop her but continued fleeing at 95 miles per hour. At milepost 140, Martinez reportedly accelerated to 130 miles per hour. An assisting trooper attempted to deploy tire spikes at milepost 131 but was unsuccessful. Troopers were then notified that additional first responders would be set up with spikes at milepost 62. As the pursuit neared the area, Martinez’s vehicle hit a tire spike strip, causing the left front tire to lose air and forcing her to pull over on the side of the interstate. Traffic was subsequently shut down, and a high-risk stop was conducted by multiple troopers. Martinez reportedly refused to comply with commands to exit her vehicle or roll down her window. Troopers used a loudspeaker to call out to her, but she did not respond. Authorities said the standoff lasted for 40 minutes.Witness captures wrong way driver on video during dangerous I-215 chase At one point, Martinez called AAA to fix her tire. AAA contacted Emery County Sheriff’s dispatch and provided her phone number. A trooper made contact with Martinez via phone and was able to talk her into exiting the vehicle. Martinez was arrested and booked into the Emery County Jail on one count of third-degree felony failure to stop at the command of law enforcement and one Class B misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
