The sequel to the beloved Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan film hits theaters sometime in 2025
Round and round, here we go again! After months and months of teasing, Freaky Friday 2 is officially in production and has its eye on a 2025 premiere date. Look out for earthquakes, L.A., and maybe avoid fortune cookies too, unless you’re ready for a perspective-shifting experiment in seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
Disney confirmed that today was the first day of filming with a photo showing original body swap stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan holding hands in front of their respective trailers. But there’s a twist! Whether or not this was intentional, the two actors are actually sitting in front of each other’s trailers—we see you, Disney! Disney also finally released an official synopsis in a press release sent out today. It reads: “A sequel to the beloved 2003 film with a multigenerational twist, the film picks up years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.” The studio also confirmed that Mark Harmon will reprise his role as Tess’ husband, Ryan, with Chad Michael Murray also returning to the cast. As Anna apparently has a “soon-to-be stepdaughter,” it seems like his character, Jake, may not be in a relationship with her anymore. Maybe they’re divorced co-parents? We’ll see. Also reprising their roles are Pink Slip’s Christina Vidal Mitchell and Haley Hudson , the fateful Chinese restaurant’s Lucille Soong and Rosalind Chao, and strict teacher Stephen Tobolowsky. These veteran Friday actors will be joined by Julia Butters , Sophia Hammons , Manny Jacinto , and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan for the sequel. It will be directed by Nisha Ganatra, whose previous credits include episodes of Welcome To Chippendales, And Just Like That..., Brooklyn 99, and more. Currently, Disney is referring to the film simply as “the sequel to Freaky Friday,” so it seems like they might not have a title locked in yet. Hopefully, they’ll realize Freaky Saturday is more fun that Freaky Friday 2 before someone has to swap into Curtis’ body and make it happen themselves.
