A new transit center in Muldoon is being planned, with the purpose of making traveling by bus easier and safer.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A new transit center in Muldoon is being planned, with the purpose of making traveling by bus easier and safer. The Muldoon Transit Center is designed to serve as a collection of three bus stops, featuring a host of amenities, according to Bart Rudolph , Director of the Anchorage Public Transportation Department .

“There’s two in Muldoon one on DeBarr. The goal is to combine those into one location, so people who are transferring between buses or going to their destination in the area won’t have to cross those busy streets, hopefully making it safer to make the connections while also providing amenities for the riders,” Rudolph said. The Transit Center will include amenities for bus operators with a break room and restroom among the top priorities, Rudolph said. “We are planning to coordinate this with the Muldoon Public Library, so we hope to co-locate the library and the Transit Center together,” he said. “It will help improve operations, it will make bus operations a lot more smooth and efficient … Right now one of our bus stops is actually in a turn lane going into Fred Meyer, so it’s difficult for buses and cars to navigate that space.” Rudolph said the project is still in the planning stage, and choosing a location is a top priority. The main deciding factor for where the center will be built is the amount of space available. “We need about two and a half to three acres, so we’re looking for parcels north of DeBarr and west of Muldoon...We just concluded a big round of public involvement, asking people what they want in a transit center. That helped us define the space needs.” The planning study will take another six months to a year to complete. After that, a land acquisition phase, using the federal process, will begin. Next will be the design and engineering phase. “Then hopefully, if we get funding, we currently don’t have funding yet, we’ll construct the project. So we’re looking at a good four to six years probably.” Funding for the planning stage of the project came from the Federal Transit Administration. Rudolph says he’s hoping a discretionary grant from the FTA will fund the construction of the project when the time comes. Rudolph says it’s uncertain what will happen to the current bus stops in the area. They won’t be key transfer points, but they may still exist in the current areas. “We’re still taking input from community stakeholders and people who live in the area as to what they might want included. Right now, we know a library and a community meeting space are the things that have kind of risen to the top, but we’re still taking feedback as to what the overall facility may include,” he said. “The main goal here is looking at how can transit be a catalyst for development or a catalyst for providing other amenities for the community that they don’t have.”Federal judge accused of misconduct disbarred by Alaska Supreme CourtPalmer senator to leave office Friday to focus on gubernatorial campaign14,000 pounds of Christmas magic take flight across Alaska with Toys for Tots
