A group of Iowa choir students is headed to Alaska to share their music with Anchorage.
Despite being almost 3,000 miles apart, the University of Dubuque has a connection to Alaska that dates back to the school’s early days.
“In the early days of University of Dubuque, it was very welcoming to people from all over,” said Kristen Eby, the choral director and Music Department Chair for the university. “One of the early graduates from the seminary was a who was the very first Presbyterian pastor who was ordained. ” Located in northern Iowa, the private university has a student body of around 1,200, making it one of the smallest colleges in the state.
Despite its smaller size, Eby told Alaska’s News Source that the choir has been touring for over 100 years, visiting locations like California, Puerto Rico, and Canada. According to Eby, the 30-person choir will spend a week in Anchorage, performing at several churches:United Protestant Church at 11 a.m. on May 10“The theme is basket weaving and creating art out of something that’s out of nature and creating something that’s both functional and artistic,” she explained.
During their week-long visit, the choir will also be visiting the Alaska Native Heritage Center and Denali National Park.
“I’m sure that the gorgeous landscape will be amazing,” Eby said. “I can’t say we have many mountains in Iowa. ”“There’s so much in our country to experience and how awesome,” she said.
“I mean that in the real sense of awesome, like awe-inspiring, to be in a place like Alaska with just its incredible beauty and really fascinating history and wonderful cultures. I think it’s going to be really educational. ”“Music is a great way to connect with people and to share, and so we would love to just come and do some of that,” Eby said.
