According to the report, in 2025, the city had 15 people killed in pedestrian versus vehicle collisions — the highest total the department saw in the past decade.

The report tracks pedestrian fatalities in Anchorage between 2016 and 2025.

“We can’t issue citations to drivers. We can’t issue citations to pedestrians. What we can do from the public health response is look at those specific areas of just overall risk factor mitigation,” said Riley Fitting, an Epidemiology Specialist 2 with the State of Alaska Epidemiology.

“This is something that we’ve had in mind because this is an injury that has been growing in prevalence recently. ” Pedestrian deaths spiked in Anchorage in both 2024 and 2025. According to the report, in 2025, the city had 15 people killed in pedestrian versus vehicle collisions — the highest total the department saw in the past decade. In 2024, the city had 14 people killed in pedestrian versus vehicle collisions.

The year before, the Anchorage Police Department recorded just six pedestrian deaths from these types of collisions. In the past decade, according to the report, September — at 16% — saw the highest number of pedestrian versus vehicle fatalities in Anchorage.

The report also found the highest concentration of deaths occurred from August and October between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. “The biggest epidemiological trend that we saw across these years and times is that the majority of these fatalities are clustered around the fall equinox in the evening hours. Not so much in the winter, not as much in the spring or in the summer, but really around the fall,” Fitting said.

The report says reduced daylight during this time and winter driving conditions may increase the risk of these types of fatalities.

“That is likely due to a change in the lighting that’s available when you go from summertime — where it’s light all night — to the fall where it starts getting dark earlier and you have some rain,” Sgt. David Noll, with APD, said. The report also noted data obtained from 2016–24 showed 54% of pedestrians killed were impaired.

Meanwhile, the report found 34% of drivers were also impaired. However, Fitting cautioned the driver impairment figure could be an undercount because data wasn’t available in cases where drivers fled the scene. According to the report, 30% of drivers involved in fatal pedestrian crashes did flee.

“Substance use, alcohol use — preventing that, either on the driver’s side or on the pedestrian side, can absolutely be an area for prevention,” Fitting said. , during an interview with the APD regarding impairment and pedestrian versus vehicle collisions, Chief Sean Case told Alaska’s News Source, “Impairment is resulting in poor decision making, which is resulting in fatal collisions … If you’re going to be walking out on foot, you also want to have one of your friends that’s with you that isn’t impaired.

”As of Sunday, Anchorage has had three people hit and killed by vehicles in 2026. Alaska’s News Source reached out to the APD for an interview regarding the 92 deaths, but the department was not available to speak on Monday.
