Gov. Mike Dunleavy largely sided with an Eklutna Hydroelectric Project owners’ proposal that is intended to restore water flows year-round to 11 of the 12 miles of the Eklutna River.

that supporters hope will include year-round fish habitats — especially salmon that used to spawn in the Eklutna River — Gov. Mike Dunleavy largely sided with an Eklutna Hydroelectric Project owners’ proposal Wednesday, saying in part that he intended to restore water flows year-round to most of the Eklutna River.

The decision comes after a monthslong back-and-forth between the project’s owners — Chugach Electric Association , Matanuska Electric Association , and the Municipality of Anchorage — and the Native Village of Eklutna. The Anchorage Assembly opposed that proposal, expressing concerns about what reconstructing parts could mean for Anchorage’s water quality, something the utility owners have long denied.

Both CEA and MEA have shared interest in the clean energy project with 25% and 44% of their renewable generation, respectively, coming from the hydroelectric plant. The city owns the majority share of the hydro project at 53.33%, with Chugach’s share of 30% and MEA’s overall share 16.67%, although the municipality previously lost its voting rights.
