Birds of a feather flock together to Anchorage: what to know ahead of spring migration

Migratory birds will soon be returning to Anchorage, some — gulls, ducks and geese — have already returned.

Though birdwatchers are eagerly anticipating the start of the season, it also brings an increase in injured birds. “Window strikes really take off in the spring and in the fall when migration is occurring,” said Maggie McConkey, Avian Welfare Director atBird TLC recommends keeping cats indoors throughout the summer and also putting decals on windows to reduce birds running into them.

If you do encounter an injured bird, anyone can call Bird TLC to report it or drop it off themselves. “Go ahead and give us a call,” McConkey said. “And we can guide them through the process, whether it’s appropriate for them to facilitate a rescue.” To prevent window strikes, placing stickers or some sort of decal on the outside of a window can help birds see them, McConkey said. Ideal spacing is 2 inches apart. Litter along roadways also leads to feeding birds getting hit by cars, according to McConkey, giving yet another reason not to litter. For those living outside of Southcentral Alaska, Bird TLC can also connect callers to other centers in the state, such as theSupporters can choose from 8 different bird tattoo designs, get them inked, and 25% of proceeds go to Bird TLC.
