An Anchorage woman faces one count of animal neglect after seven dogs were seized from her residence earlier this month.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - An Anchorage woman is facing one count of animal neglect after seven dogs were seized from her residence earlier this month amid “unsanitary” conditions.
According to a complaint issued by the third judicial district of Anchorage and obtained by Alaska’s News Source, an Anchorage police officer responded around 6 p.m. on May 5 to an address belonging to 45-year-old Amanda Matthews on a report of animal neglect. Animal Control advised they were doing a welfare check on four adult dogs and three puppies, stating they had ongoing issues with the residence and multiple neighbors complained of the strong smell of feces coming from there.
When they arrived, the officer noticed the same “very pungent” smell. Matthews’ son answered the door and refused to let either the police or Animal Control inside, saying his mother was not home. Matthews’ son did let Animal Control officers conduct an ammonia reading from the door, with a result indicating ammonia levels just over the limit where officers would be required to wear a respirator mask.
Once a search warrant was obtained, APD walked in the home and observed the residence was extremely unsanitary and the smell of feces was “overwhelming. ” There were several piles of feces on the floor throughout the residence, as well as mold growing in areas. Additional testing for ammonia showed rising levels stronger than what was seen at the front door.
Matthews’ son said he has been staying at the home to assist his mother, who was having health issues, that the dogs belonged to her, and he was only taking care of them while she was away, the complaint stated. He said she’d be returning to the residence in the evening, although she did not return while officers were present. Animal Control seized all seven of the dogs from inside the residence.
As of Thursday, Matthews has not yet been served a warrant, according to the APD. Alaska’s News Source attempted to reach Matthews for comment, but had not heard back as of publication.
