GIRDWOOD, Alaska - A powerful winter storm that is moving towards Alyeska Resort is bringing dangerous conditions from Thursday through Saturday morning, necessitating the closure of the upper slopes of the mountain.
The resort is preparing for sustained winds between 40 and 55 mph with gusts reaching into the 90s, along with additional snow and rain. “We are expecting to receive about three to four inches of snow water equivalent, which could realize from anywhere of 30 to 40 inches of snow with freezing line fluctuating at about 1,500 feet,” Mountain Communications Manager Bayne Salmon said. Due to the intensity of the storm, Alyeska has closed the upper mountain, including the Aerial Tram and Glacier Bowl Express lifts, Salmon said. “We’re really focused on keeping the mountain open where it’s safe,” he said. “Closures are a tool. They’re not a setback. If they’re prepared, flexible, and willing to follow guidance, this is going to be storm skiing at its most raw.Resort officials are urging guests to check conditions before arriving, expect delayed openings or closures, dress for extreme weather, and respect all mountain closures and ski patrol guidance.Cause of death revealed for Wasilla doctor charged with possessing child sexual abuse material‘Any details will help’: Friends of man visiting from Texas missing for days near Healy struggle to understand his disappearance
