GIRDWOOD , Alaska - A skier was severely injured Saturday after a frightening crash in the Alaska Airlines Slush Cup event at the Alyeska Resort Spring Carnival.
Family members of 28-year-old William Ingrim have confirmed that Ingrim is currently hospitalized and in a medically-induced coma after becoming injured while participating in Saturday’s pond skim. Video footage captured at the event shows Ingrim skiing down the slope leading up to the pool of water, hitting the jump at high speed, and crossing over almost the entire length of the pool before landing hard near the end of it.
Medical personnel staged at the pool can be seen rushing to his aid in the moments after the crash. Ingrim’s mother, Robin, told Alaska’s News Source on Sunday that she was told her son is “stable” but in a medically-induced coma. She added that he will “probably” be paralyzed. Robin said that her son had surgery on his neck to reduce pressure on his spinal column.
“I’m very scared,” Robin said. “I’ve gotten to the point, I just got to deal with it. I need to be there. My husband’s sending me pictures and my son is hooked up to things, and all it does is scare me to death.
” Ingrim said that she has been told her son’s upper and lower quadrants are paralyzed, but that once doctors take the pressure off his neck, the upper-body paralysis will resolve itself.
“They aren’t thinking he is going to get the use of his legs back,” Robin said. “He wants us to let him die, and I’m like, ‘I can’t do that. ’ “By the grace of God, Will is gonna get better, and I’m hoping he’s able to walk again someday,” Robin said. According to his mother, Ingrim is a commercial fisherman.
During the winter months, she said he teaches free ride classes as a ski coach at Alyeska.
“He’s precious to me,” Robin said. “Will is the nicest young man you know. ”“People keep checking in with me and I appreciate that,” Robin said.
“He’s just a young man that thinks his life has come to an end, and he doesn’t realize that his life is not the only one that has changed. So, it’s going to be very hard on all of us. ”Officials with Alyeska told Alaska’s News Source on Monday that their thoughts are with the participant and their loved ones during this time. The resort also stated that the safety of their guests and participants remains their highest priority.
“The Slush Cup is a longstanding event that is carefully planned with safety measures in place, including trained personnel and emergency response teams on site,” the statement from Alyeska spokesperson Bayne Salmon read. “Out of respect for the individual and their family, we will not be sharing additional personal details at this time.
” Alaska’s News Source asked the resort if anyone in the past has ever been injured while participating in the event in the past, but have not heard back as of publication.
