Instead of scheduling many different appointments with different providers, patients like Welling can see all of their doctors, nurses and specialists during one half-day at the clinic.
TOLEDO, Ohio - A new clinic is providing comprehensive ALS care in Northwest Ohio, so patients no longer have to travel hours away for treatment.
It’s been a gamechanger for patients like Steve Welling, a Northwood father of three who has been diagnosed with ALS since 2022.
“I thought it was odd, I would look at my arms and see the spasms going on, the vesiculations, and then I noticed it happening in my legs too,” Welling said. The disease has no known cure. The brain loses connection with the muscles and over time that impacts a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe.
“Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, respiratory therapy, pulmonology, dietician, palliative care and obviously neurology,” said Dr. Clayton Buback, MD, director of the Neurosciences Center ALS Clinic. Dr. Buback said up until recently, patients could not find comprehensive care in Northwest Ohio. They would have to travel to hospitals hours away or out of state, and set up multiple, separate appointments with their providers.
“I do know of patients who simply did not receive multi-disciplinary care because traveling that far on a regular basis was quite burdensome,” Buback said. Instead of scheduling many different appointments with different providers, patients like Welling can see all of their doctors, nurses and specialists during one half-day at the clinic. Currently, the clinic offers one afternoon and one morning clinic session per month.
Its a much more accessible format for patients and has brought attention to the disease and the needs of people in Northwest Ohio.
“Having the clinic here in Toledo, raising awareness, trying to raise funds for it, because this is an incurable disease right now, we want to make sure that it gets enough financial support to find a cure and have people live with this much longer,” Welling said. Buback said because insurance companies do not consider clinic appointments the same as they would another appointment, the clinics are not always covered by insurance. The cost is covered in part through donations.
