this spring — especially for birch, alder, and other tree pollens — that experts say are so high, they are the most concentrated amounts reported in the last five years. The Asthma Allergy and Immunology Center of Alaska said the conditions outside are reflected in the high numbers of people seeking treatment for allergies and other issues in the city.
“We’re seeing patients who haven’t been seen here for many, many years, who are having lots and lots of symptoms right now,” said Bryan Farthing, a physician assistant and nationally certified pollen counter at the center.According to Farthing, Anchorage is seeing 1,000 grains per cubic meter, which is well above the 90-grains-per-cubic-meter mark that indicates “high” pollen counts. “We’re kind of back to what we have traditionally seen in the past,” Farthing said. “Prior to the pandemic, this was a pretty normal thing to see pollen counts in the 1,000 grains per cubic meter .” In years past, he said, it wasn’t uncommon to get to up to 3,000 grains per meter, but that’s changed over time. “We’ve had a lull for almost five years, where we haven’t seen these kind of robust numbers,” Farthing said, adding that the reason for the change is unclear. “Maybe it’s the difference in freestyle cycles during the winter, invasive species,” Farthing said. “I think it’s multiple factors. Part of what I am doing with my data is to give patients who have allergies information on a day-by-day, week-by-week basis, but also collect data from multiple points, so that we can have more information and have better predictive models.” In the next few weeks, Farthing said grass allergy season will also arrive; grass pollen tends to hit people harder than tree pollen. Farthing recommended that people suffering from allergies this season work with their healthcare team to find possible solutions. He also said habits such as vacuuming their home and keeping windows shut can help too. ‘Unimaginable conditions’: Police find 71 dogs in a single residence, put out urgent call for help from communityAlaska co-founder of music talent agency among three confirmed dead in San Diego plane crashAlaskans eye Essential Air Service cuts proposed by the Trump administration‘It’s just so heavy’: fiancée of Iron Dog racer calls discovery of body bittersweet closure
