San Francisco will be filled with ways to commemorate this year’s theme, ‘Our Planet, Our Power’
Earth Day is fast approaching, and San Francisco will host numerous gatherings dedicated to protecting the environment before and after the April 22 observance. Here are some of The City’s best events for residents to commemorate the holiday and participate in this year’s theme — “Our Planet, Our Power.”
Bug Day Eleven scientific organizations will gather at the Randall Museum in Corona Heights for the institution’s annual celebration of arthropods, arachnids, insects and other critters. Guests will be able to enjoy live music, make their own arts and crafts, and interact with live bugs. There will also be relay races featuring pollinating insects and awards given out for attendees’ best bug-themed costumes. The admission-free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 199 Museum Way. Visitors are encouraged to find alternative transportation, as onsite parking is limited.
Earth Day human banner Indivisible San Francisco is inviting interested participants to Ocean Beach, where participants will gather together to form the message “Energy From Heaven!” as part of a human banner. Guests are asked to arrive at the beach no later than 11:30 a.m. for the aerial photo to be taken around noon. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring tiny handheld mirrors to reflect the sun’s rays.
Earth Day Festival and Green Business Exposition Yerba Buena Gardens will host an afternoon filled with live music, food vendors, educational workshops and a tree-planting demonstration on the venue’s living roof. As part of San Francisco Climate Week, businesses promoting sustainable products and services will set up booths throughout the urban park. Guests can RSVP online for the festival, which runs from noon to 3 p.m.
Bernal Heights Earth Day Stroll Neighborhood residents will take over Cortland Avenue and fill the street with live music, games, environmental demonstrations, educational talks and other fun offerings. More than 70 sustainability groups will participate in this year’s event, giving guests tips and advice on how to protect the environment on a regular basis. Guests can RSVP online for the event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Crucial Reggae Sundays The Golden Gate Bandshell will host a day of live music in honor of Earth Day. Performances will begin at noon with the musical acts Razteria and Los Rakas. Their sets will be followed by Crucial Reggae Sundays, a weekly event hosted by DJs Sep, Guidance and Irie Dole. The free concert runs from noon to 7 p.m. along Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive.
Earth Day San Francisco The New Farm in Bayview-Hunters Point will host a day of live music and entertainment, environmental education and cultural programs as part of the community space’s annual holiday festival. Guests will also be able to browse a pop-up art gallery and shop from local food vendors. The admission-free event runs from noon to 6 p.m. The venue is located at 10 Cargo Way.
Earth Day panel The San Francisco Public Library will host an in-depth discussion featuring local conservation and environmental-justice leaders. Led by California Natural Resources Agency Secretary Wade Crowfoot, the conversation will center on the state’s longstanding reputation of championing nature conservation efforts. San Francisco Environment Department Director Tyrone Jue will deliver closing remarks. The panel will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium, which is located at 100 Larkin St.
Alemany Farm Earth Day Friends of Alemany Farm and the Alemany Apartments Community will host their 19th annual holiday celebration, bringing a community barbecue cookout, live music, face painting, games and more to the neighborhood. Guests will also be able to take tours of the farm and participate in related activities. The admission-free event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 700 Alemany Blvd. Donations are being accepted.
EcoCenter’s 16th anniversary celebration The EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park will host its 16th anniversary celebration, giving visitors opportunities to play free games and activities, as well as attend educational workshops. As part of the event, guests can volunteer to get their hands dirty and participate in shifts cleaning up the center’s wetland, play area and outdoor classroom. Attendees can RSVP online for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center is located at 32 Jennings St.
Earth San Francisco: The Art Playground The Walt Disney Family Museum is hosting an event for families with children ages 3 to 6, at which little ones can learn simple art techniques by making crafts out of recycled materials. Employees will be on hand to offer tips and encouragement to children in attendance. The admission-free event runs both days from 10 a.m. to noon. The museum is located at 104 Montgomery St. in the Presidio.
