Voters in the border town of Progreso have a dealt a blow to the Alanis clan, removing one of its members from the school board. The family has dominated municipal government and the Progreso school district for a decade, but its grip on power has been weakened in recent months by a federal investigation into cocaine trafficking in South Texas . Gerardo 'Jerry' Alanis , then mayor of Progreso , was arrested in March on charges of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute.

It’s not our victory. It’s Progreso’s victory.” Acosta, an attendance clerk for the neighboring Santa Maria school district, out-polled Alex Alanis, 675 to 558, according to unofficial results released by the Hidalgo County Elections Department.
