Friends have made a roadside memorial for Kelly Hunt, who's body was discovered last week after she was missing for over three months, but questions still remain about what happened.
last week in a ravine near West 36th Avenue and Lois Drive. She’d been missing for more than three months. The grim discovery answered the most pressing question of whether Hunt was still alive months after she’d gone missing, but people concerned about her welfare still have plenty of questions, including Alexis Savage, who identified herself as a concerned community member.
“A 19-year-old doesn’t just walk out the door when she has college on her mind, she was due to go back to school within the next week, and then she was found in a ravine,” Savage said. She is described as 5-foot-4, about 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Police say she was last wearing a dark jacket and dark pants. Anyone with information is encouraged to call dispatch at 311 or Crime Stoppers.
Family members said Hunt was on her way to a Bible college in Soldotna, but had first stopped at a friend’s house in Spenard after flying in to Anchorage the evening of Jan. 6. The friend said Hunt announced early the next morning she was going outside to drink with someone, which was the last time she was seen.
Antonia Commack, who identifies as an advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous people, said she did not believe authorities took Hunt’s disappearance seriously at first.
“They always tell us, ‘Oh they’re probably out doing whatever, but they’ll come back,’ Commack said. ”But what happens when they don’t come back? They always start too late. ” Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case said police began investigating as soon as the disappearance was reported to them on Jan. 11 and that detectives followed up on leads day and night.
“Our detective unit, particularly a homicide detective, has been detecting this case from the time it was reported,” Case said in a weekend interview. “And because we investigate missing person’s cases with our homicide detectives, we utilize everything they have available to them. “We are always keeping in mind that a missing person’s case may turn into a death investigation, and a death investigation may turn into a homicide case,” Case explained.
“So from the very moment that we start investigating these cases, we always have that long-term possibility in mind. ” Case said the State Medical Examiner will determine Hunt’s cause of death, which will determine whether the case will be pursued as a death investigation or a homicide. Commack and Savage are both convinced that Hunt was murdered. Savage said the discovery of her body has been hard on her family but has brought them a bit of closure.
“There is some sort of peace, even though this is not what we wanted the outcome to be, I feel like there is a certain level of peace that we have,” Savage said, adding that at least now the family can stop their constant searching.
