Up to an inch of rain could fall for Prince William sound through Tuesday morning

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The nicest stretch of weather Southcentral Alaska and other parts of the state have seen all season long was a welcome sight this past weekend. While temperatures managed to warm well into the 50s, some 60s were reported across Southcentral.

With rain having returned to the region, temperatures will be cooler for the next few days as a wetter weather pattern once again builds across the state.Temperatures will be five to ten degrees cooler today across Southcentral, as widespread rain and cloud cover remain with us. For many locations, temperatures may only nudge upwards by a degree or two throughout Monday. While widespread rain will stick around throughout the day, rainfall totals won’t be extreme. On average, we’ll see anywhere from 0.25 to 0.50 inches of rain for inland locations, while coastal regions manage to see up to an inch of rain for Prince William Sound. Areas near Homer and Seward will see less than half an inch of rain. This widespread activity will begin to lighten up into the night, with only lingering showers into Tuesday morning. This will open the door for a brief reprieve from the rain, with sunshine building back in for Tuesday. The sunshine will be short-lived as another low builds in from the Pacific Ocean will reinforce the wet and cloudy weather. There is some good news for inland locations, as we’ll largely stay on the dry side, with just cloud cover and an isolated shower.Southeast Alaska managed to see a nice Mother’s Day, but that will change slightly, with isolated to scattered showers set to impact areas of the Panhandle into the evening hours. For locations that do see rain, it will be very light at times. Most locations will see less than a quarter of an inch throughout the day, with some gusty conditions taking hold across the Northern Panhandle. While this week will keep rain in the forecast, we will see some ample dry time throughout the week. Rain will generally remain fairly scattered in nature this week, with highs warming into the 50s. Both today and Wednesday may provide the driest weather we’ll see this week.Coming off a beautiful weekend in the Interior, the sun is still shining to start off the workweek. However, rain and snow are in the forecast later today and into Tuesday. This comes as moisture streams in from Southcentral, over the Alaska Range and as far north as Fairbanks. Rainfall amounts will be light, with less than 0.20 inches expected into Tuesday morning. We’ll also see some breezy conditions throughout the day, although winds should remain less than about 30 mph. While rain looks to be the predominant precipitation type, some snow will fall, as snow levels drop to road level late tonight into Tuesday. This will most likely occur for areas of the Richardson Highway south of Trims Camp and between Denali Park and Cantwell. There is the potential that these locations could see up to six inches of snow, with any moisture tapering off by Tuesday evening.Out of all places across Alaska, the North Slope will see the quietest weather this week. We’ll see persistent easterly winds up to 30 mph that will remain throughout the week. This will lead to areas of reduced visibility, with locations west of Wainwright seeing the best chance for blowing snow. Temperatures will remain fairly mild this week, as daily highs climb into the 20s, while overnight lows remain in the 10s. An area of low pressure has moved into the east-central Bering Sea this morning, with widespread rain pushing out ahead of it. This rain is impacting areas of Southwest, the Interior, and Southcentral Alaska, and bringing isolated to scattered showers for Southeast Alaska. Rainfall amounts will remain low, but on average, 0.20 to 0.50 inches of rain will be possible as far north as Nome. We’ll also hold onto some gusty winds throughout the day, with winds up to 45 mph near Gambell/St. Lawrence. A high surf advisory will impact the Kuskokwim Delta Coastline through this afternoon, where water levels could be one to three feet above the normal high tide. Large breaking waves of three to six feet will also impact areas along the Kuskokwim Bay and Etolin Strait shoreline.Active, wet and breezy weather will remain with areas of the Central and Eastern Aleutians this week. We’ll see several areas of low pressure lift north out of the Pacific Ocean, reinforcing the wet weather this week. Winds will also be quite gusty at times, with winds up to 50 mph possible. These winds will favor areas of the Eastern Aleutians later this week, as another low builds in from the south. While wetter weather looks to remain with the state for the next two weeks, we’ll still see ample dry time in the forecast. Most of the rain looks to favor coastal regions from the Aleutians, through Southwest, Southcentral and Southeast. With the return to these wetter conditions, afternoon highs won’t be as warm as we experienced this weekend. However, we’ll still see warm conditions spreading across the state. There’s a decent shot for highs to warm well into the upper 60s for the Interior into the weekend..
