Anchorage Police Department recruits are burning rubber on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson as part of a weeklong Emergency Vehicle Operations Course in collaboration with JBER Security Forces.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage Police Department recruits are burning rubber on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. It’s not just fun and games for these rookies; it’s part of a weeklong Emergency Vehicle Operations Course in collaboration with JBER Security Forces.

“There’s a lot of skills and techniques that we’re teaching the recruits on how to maintain control of the vehicle,” APD’s Lead EVOC Instructor Matthew Hall said. “It’s about getting somewhere safely but quickly at the same time.” The course prepares recruits to respond in emergencies by simulating high-speed responses within a closed circuit, allowing trainees to practice their driving skills in a controlled environment. APD recruit Jason Cantor described the EVOC as an adrenaline rush. He said the training makes him excited to put his skills to the test when he hits the streets. “It’s definitely a fun job, that’s why I decided to do law enforcement,” he said. “Every day is a new day, not one call is the same, and it’s a great way to go out there and help people on the worst day of their lives.” After mastering the EVOC, recruits will finish training at the Police Academy before earning their badges.DOGE claims $13.6 million in real estate savings in AlaskaAnchorage man sentenced to 100 years for 2019 murder of wife and teen daughter; Family gets to ‘turn the page now’‘Leapfrogging them all the way to Nome,’ Iditarod fans follow the Iditarod by plane
