Rabbit Creek Shooting Park sees spring surge as Alaskans prepare for hunting season.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The sound of shots and smell of smoke in the air are back at Rabbit Creek Shooting Park , as crowds return to the range.
April and May, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, are two of the busiest months at the shooting park as people start brushing up on their shooting skills after a long winter.
“I think it’s a lot of people just getting back outside and knocking the rust off,” Ben Matthews, a statewide hunter education coordinator with the department, said. “It’s great to come in because we don’t want to carry a firearm out there if we’re not proficient with it, right? So, it takes training, it takes practice, it takes repetitiveness, and that’s why I think the range is so busy in the spring.
” One of the ways people can brush up on their skills this season, Matthews said, is by registering for a hunter education course. According to Matthews, the department offers classes around the entire state.
“It’s a great class. It really emphasizes firearm safety,” Matthews said.
“We have classes throughout the summer. And then there is another big push kind of the second half of July and August when people ramp up for hunting season. ” In Alaska, according to Matthews, units game management units 7, 13, 14, 15, and 20 require a hunter education certification to hunt for anyone born after 1986. The Department of Fish and Game, according to Matthews also offers a ‘Becoming an Outdoor Woman’ and an ‘Alaskans at Field’ program.
Have your muzzle pointed in a safe directionKeep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot“One of the biggest causes for firearm incidents is guns going off in vehicles, whether that’s a truck, car, a boat, an ATV,” Matthews said.
