The Nunalleq archeological project has produced more than 100,000 artifacts from pre-European contact Yup'ik culture, but it’s been a constant race against time as coastal erosion threatens to wipe out the valuables.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - An important Alaska archeological site sits on the shore of the Bering sea at the village of Quinhagak. For 17 years, village volunteers and archeologists with the University of Aberdeen in Scotland have been excavating the; a large, 17th century, multi-room house.

It has produced the largest collection of Yup’ik culture pre-European contact items in the world. Then this past October, into the southwest coast of Alaska with destructive force. Homes were lost. Entire villages evacuated. Shoreline eaten away.Sixty feet of shoreline at the Nunalleq project was left vulnerable to the powerful storm. Volunteers rushed to the beach and collected around 1,000 items that had been washed out of the dig site. There is no idea how many artifacts were lost. Since 2009, over 100,000 artifacts have been collected from the site, now housed in the Nunalleq Museum in Quihagak. Keeping the items close to home while preserving the traditional culture for the young people. The artifacts can be seen on the museum’s website. The permafrost in the area preserved many items made from natural materials — wood, grass and leather — items not normally found in archeological sites. Archeologists will return to the site next spring to determine the extent of the damage and to continue their race against time.
