Alaska Airlines kicked off its second annual Aviation Day on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Hangar.

During the event, Alaska Airlines said it anticipated 700 people would attend, most of them being students from Anchorage School District, Mat-Su Borough School District and home school programs.

“People seem to love airplanes and a lot of times they see the airplane from walking down a jet bridge to getting on an airplane, but they don’t get up close and personal,” Marilyn Romano with Alaska Airlines said. “We’re going to let them get up close.

” During the event, students had opportunities to use 737 flight simulators with the support and guidance of Alaska Airlines pilots, get life attendant training and learn how to marshal aircraft from ramp agents.

“It’s much harder than it looks,” said Desiree Palakiko, an Alaska Airlines ramp agent said to a group of kids. “At first, it was really scary, but when you keep doing it consistently, you just get used to marshalling it in. ” The event gave students a behind-the-scenes perspective on aviation, including crawling into the cargo pit of a Boeing 737 to see how luggage is loaded.

According to Alaska Airlines, the event aimed to expose young people to the many careers available in aviation, from maintenance to customer service.

“I think it makes it much more real in their mind that they might be actually able to make that transition from where they are right now,” James Buckingham, a Palmer resident, said. “Although they’ve got a few school days left before they can do that. ” Partners from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson brought military aircraft to the event, including two F-35s from Eielson Air Force Base, a Blackhawk helicopter and a C-130.

Three of the four military aircraft were flown by Alaska Airlines pilots.
