A 53-year-old man shot by a Bethel police officer in March was arrested Monday in Anchorage on charges tied to the encounter.
last month has been arrested in Anchorage on two felony assault charges tied to the events that preceded the shooting, Alaska State Troopers said. Troopers said Wassillie Larson was arrested Monday on two counts of third-degree assault following an investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation.
The shooting happened March 25 at about 4:05 a.m. in Bethel. According to a preliminary investigation, officers had earlier taken Larson to the local hospital after he was found standing in the road and refusing to move to the sidewalk.When officers approached him again, investigators said Larson pulled out a knife and ignored repeated orders to drop it. Troopers said he then moved toward an officer while holding the knife, and the officer opened fire, hitting him. Larson was flown to an Anchorage-area hospital with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation’s Western Alaska Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation into the shooting at the request of the Bethel Police Department.
