Fifteen years after a devastating EF-4 tornado struck Elmore and Tallapoosa Counties, survivors like Nancy Myers share their stories of loss, resilience, and community rebuilding. The storm claimed seven lives and left lasting scars, but also inspired efforts to protect future generations.
For those who survived or lost loved ones, the April 27, 2011, tornado outbreak remains a defining moment in their lives. While Tuscaloosa and northern Alabama bore the brunt of the storms, the River Region was not spared.
An EF-4 tornado ravaged Elmore and Tallapoosa Counties, leaving miles of destruction and claiming seven lives. Nancy Myers, the owner of a local park, still reflects on that fateful day. The weather forecast had warned of severe conditions, but no one anticipated the sheer intensity of the storm. Myers recalled her husband rushing back inside, urging her to grab their dogs and take shelter in the closet.
The sound of the tornado was deafening, like a box of cracker jacks being violently shaken. In an instant, the storm had passed, but the devastation was unimaginable. Myers knew four of the victims, including a mother who would often deliver forgotten homework to her children’s school. She was a kind woman, Myers remembered, with a daughter and two grandchildren living nearby.
Myers also remembered three men who provided support to the injured, including one who helped a grieving woman whose grandchild had perished. She said the trauma of that night would stay with those men forever. Though the memories are painful, Myers believes in moving forward. We can’t change the past, she said, but we can rebuild and support one another.
Her husband, Billy Ray, who passed away in 2019, never fully recovered from the trauma of that day. In the years since, a storm shelter capable of holding 30 people has been built on the Myers property, serving as a safe haven for the entire community.
Meanwhile, in unrelated news, authorities have identified a suspect in the recent shooting near the White House correspondents’ dinner, who was found armed with multiple weapons
