Alabama will hold a special congressional primary election in August after the U.S. Supreme Court tossed out a court-ordered redistricting map and cleared the way for the state’s own.
Gov. Kay Ivey set the primary for Aug. 11 covering four congressional districts, including Districts 1 and 2. There will be no runoff. The regularly scheduled primary election is still on for Tuesday, May 19.
The general election remains on track for Nov. 3. The change would give Republicans a chance to reclaim the district now represented by Rep. Shomari Figures of Mobile, a Democrat. Figures was elected in 2024 under the court-ordered map.
Figure’s election gave the state two Black representatives in its congressional delegation for the first time. Black residents comprise more than a quarter of Alabama’s population. Ivey, a Republican, said, “Alabamians now have another opportunity to send strong voices to Washington to fight for our values, and I encourage them to get out and vote in this special primary election on August 11.
I also urge them to head to the polls this coming Tuesday, May 19 to vote in all other races. We are experiencing strong momentum in Alabama, and I am very optimistic for our future. ”Convicted Mobile kingpin’s sister-in-law sentenced for helping to hide gun, jewelry from agents1 dead, 1 injured after shooting in Mobile’s Happy Hill communityMary G.
