is seeking public feedback on an updated school counseling model, the first revision to the guidance framework in more than 20 years. State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey said the department is behind when it comes to guidance for school counselors and it’s time for an update.
The new plan is shorter and more concise, and for the first time includes a clear way for schools to review and evaluate their guidance programs. The updated model includes specific emphasis areas for each age group that school counselors will focus on. Elementary students will receive guidance on character development and coping skills, while high school students will focus on personal responsibility and decision-making. Mackey said school counselors are the key to having high-capacity schools, so he wants to ensure everyone’s on the same page. The plan reflects changes in technology from the 22-year-old model. The old plan required counselors to have a dedicated landline to communicate with parents. The updated version acknowledges they can also communicate through email, instant messaging apps and other modern methods. “School counselors don’t do therapeutic care and even if they’re doing counseling sessions, those go through a parent-approval process so part of the plan is, ‘How do you get parents’ input? How do you get parents’ permission before you start counseling with students?’ That’s certainly important and that’s certainly changed in the last 25 years,” Mackey said.2 children, ages 9 and 10, charged with attempted murder, rape in brutal attack on 5-year-old girl, prosecutors say‘I didn’t know he was under my car’: Murder suspect’s 911 call after police say he dragged a man under his car 2 miles5-year-old child struck by vehicle, critically injured in Pensacola
