They are one of only a select few hospitals in the country to hold the Purple Heart designation.
The designation recognizes those wounded in combat and commits the hospital to their continued care, both physical and mental. Army veteran and Vietnam survivor Commander Robert Green, who wears his Purple Heart as one of the greatest symbols of honor, helped bring the recognition to the hospital.
“I am thrilled to death that it is the first Purple Heart Hospital in the state of Alabama. It’s a great honor,” Green said.“Most people go into healthcare to take care of people. And I think caring for our veterans is the ultimate way that we can do that,” Demers said. Austin Sidwell, who gave 12 years to the United States Air Force, said the designation means more than a ceremony. “Getting a program like this just highlights how great the administration here is at the hospital — and how great the hospital is in bringing in these programs to support the community,” Sidwell said. The commitment includes dedicated parking spots for Purple Heart recipients. When a veteran receives care, a recognition will be placed outside their room so every nurse knows who they are caring for.Andalusia Health is one of only a select few hospitals in the country to hold the Purple Heart designation.
