DOTHAN , Ala. - Houston County grand jurors indicted a man accused of impersonating a high-ranking state trooper while seeking a ride to Montgomery to meet with Gov. Kay Ivey .

Court records show a grand jury indictment on a charge of impersonating a peace officer was made public Monday. Police first charged 52-year-old Jason Russell Leverette in October. Investigators said Leverette was not a state trooper and this was not the first time authorities have accused him of posing as an officer, according to an online search of prior reports.

In Dothan, investigators allege Leverette walked into a finance office at the Circle West Shopping Center and told employees he was a trooper colonel working undercover. The report says he asked for a ride to Montgomery so he could meet with the governor. Employees grew suspicious and searched his name online, the document states.

That search turned up a report from Coweta County, Georgia, where deputies said Leverette claimed to be a U.S. marshal when he approached a hospital in Newnan last year with a gun in his hand. Media reports said Georgia authorities charged him in that case with disorderly conduct, reckless conduct and impersonating a police officer.
