The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $19.9 million for flood-mitigation projects in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina, the agency announced Thursday.

FEMA said the money will support long-term efforts aimed at reducing flood risk, including elevating homes and acquiring and demolishing repeatedly flooded properties. The funding is part of more than $250 million FEMA said it is awarding for more than 100 flood-mitigation projects nationwide. In Florida, FEMA approved about $2.3 million to elevate six properties in Santa Rosa County.

In Alabama, the agency approved about $1.5 million for the acquisition and demolition of four properties in Hoover, including two homes covered by the National Flood Insurance Program, FEMA said. Mississippi is set to receive $460,887 for phase one of flood-mitigation work in Madison County to reduce and slow stormwater runoff issues, according to FEMA. Kentucky will receive $416,200 for the acquisition and demolition of five National Flood Insurance Program Severe Repetitive Loss properties in Wayland, FEMA said.

South Carolina will receive $162,000 to elevate one National Flood Insurance Program Repetitive Loss property in Hilton Head Island. FEMA said the awards will be distributed through its Flood Mitigation Assistance program and Swift Current, which are designed to help states take proactive steps against flooding, the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States.
