President Trump has voiced support for shifting education oversight entirely to the states.

) - A local teacher advocacy group is raising alarms over the possibility of the U.S. Department of Education being dismantled by executive order. The Birmingham chapter of the American Federation of Teachers says the move could have significant consequences for Alabama schools, particularly regarding funding.

According to data from the 2020–2021 school year, federal funding accounted for 15% of the state’s total education budget. “You hear people just say, ‘Oh, they’re going to send the money to the states, so each state is going to decide what they do with the money.’ So there’s no guarantee that we’re going to get the same amount of money that we’re getting right now,” said Richard Franklin, Birmingham Chapter President, American Federation of Teachers. Franklin says essential programs like free and reduced lunch, as well as resources for students with disabilities and those in special education, could be impacted.“I told Linda , Linda, I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of a job.”, said President Donald Trump. “And what I want to do is let the states run schools.” Franklin argues that Alabama already has control over its schools. He points to decisions being made at the state level, such as a bill currently under discussion that would regulate student cell phone use in schools. “Well, our state legislators are in session as we speak, and they’re passing bills that affect the entire state in education—one being we’re talking about dealing with cell phones in schools. That’s not coming from the U.S. Department of Education. That’s coming from the legislators in the state of Alabama,” said Franklin.Jefferson County Schools and the City of Gardendale’s efforts to form its school system. It remains unclear when—or if—the president will sign the executive order. However, even if he does, only Congress has the authority to dismantle a federal agency.Mild Friday; rain and storms possible this weekendDauphin Island looks to construct first-ever restoration project on West End Beach‘It’s like a puzzle with a missing piece:’ Family of fatal crash victim speaks out
