Alabama voters will head to the polls Tuesday, May 19, for the state’s primary election. Here’s what you need to know before you vote, including what’s on the Houston County ballots and how to confirm your polling place.
Gov. Kay Ivey this month called a special election for Alabama’s congressional districts 1, 2, 6 and 7 after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the state to revert to its 2023 congressional maps. Redistricting and court-ordered map changes can affect which district your address is placed in, which is why two voters in the same county may not see the exact same races—and why some contests appear only in certain precincts.
Under the special election calendar, the special primary is Aug. 11 and there will be no runoff . Candidate qualifying for major parties runs May 20–May 22 . For independent candidates and minor parties, qualifying ends Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. While voters in our area will see the District 1 Congressional candidates on their ballot on Tuesday, those votes will be nullified as a result of this special election.
Ivey's office provided a map that was drawn by the Alabama Legislature in 2023 that will be used in the upcoming elections. The map was previously barred from use and replaced with a court-drawn map that included two minority opportunity districts, including the 2nd and 7th congressional districtsBefore heading to the polls, confirm that you are registered at your current address and where you are expected to go to cast your vote.
For additional assistance or if you don’t have access to your computer, call your county probate office. In addition to confirming your registration and polling place, don’t forget to also have your ID handy, as Alabama requires photo voter ID.
