The city of Akron is using new emulsion machines to repair potholes faster, more safely, and with a longer-lasting result than traditional methods.
AKRON , Ohio - The city of Akron is using new emulsion machine s to repair potholes faster, more safely, and with a longer-lasting result than traditional methods. The city purchased two of the one-man pothole repair systems this year at $300,000 each, funded through a combination of special assessments and income tax.
Before the machines, crews filled about 100 potholes a day. Deputy Bureau Manager Anthony Dolly said the new technology allows them to far exceed that number. “For the average sized hole and the machine that we have, we can probably patch 150 holes with that,” Dolly said. The machines also reduce the number of workers exposed to traffic. Previously, a repair required four people working outside in the roadway. The operator controls everything from inside the cab, using a joystick to move the arm and patch the hole.“It’s a permanent patch as opposed to a cold mix or a hot mix, we know in six months we are not going to be back patching that same pothole,” Dolly said.Dolly said the city plans to purchase more machines. In the meantime, he is asking drivers to be mindful of crews when they see the machines working in the streets. Dolly said equipment purchases like these come out of an annual budget designated for new and replacement equipment. “We are given a budget every year for the purchase of new equipment and the replacement of old equipment, so it came out of that budget,” Dolly said.Statewide quarantine issued in Ohio for the Spotted LanternflyAmazon delivery van gets stuck in water after driver makes wrong turn following GPS directionsFederal judge will not decide Friday if Cleveland will be clear of the Consent DecreeOhio roads getting safer as deadly crashes decrease for fourth straight year
