Sioux City has rallied around its ‘Manhole Michelangelo’ after his paintings got him arrested and made the Iowa city the butt of jokesSIOUX CITY, Iowa —Brandon Bradshaw eyed a manhole cover from different angles before bending his lanky frame to spray-paint a series of arcs in slashing strokes on the street around it.
After about 30 minutes, he had completed his latest work—a neon-tinged bloom of color about 10 feet across. “It sounds stupid, but the flowers kind of decide what they wanna do,” said the 46-year-old general contractor, youth sports coach and father of two. His passion for turning mundane public infrastructure into objects of whimsy has landed Bradshaw in legal trouble—and turned him into a folk hero in this western Iowa city of 87,000 where the Big Sioux River flows into the Missouri. A nearby town this month showed support for his idea with a sewer-flower-painting contest and four more plan to follow suit. A petition to drop criminal charges against Bradshaw gained about 2,200 signatures and a friend is selling T-shirts calling him the Manhole Michelangelo. Meanwhile, Sioux City has been dubbed Sewer City for its fixation on the sanctity of its public works.
