Fest adds five world premieres in second round of titles
Austin Film Festival yet again proves itself as one of the last stops before awards season with the news that it's added two of the year's most eagerly awaited movies to its lineup., the adaptation of Rachel Yoder's 2021 novel, starring Amy Adams as a new mother who suspects she may be turning into a dog.
The movie debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and will screen at AFF ahead of its release from Searchlight Pictures on Dec. 6. AFF CEO and co-founder Barbara Morgan said, “I’d never read that book and had no idea what to expect, but when I watched the film, I was kind of blown away, honestly. It’s very unique, and Amy Adams is amazing.”is already garnering award talk because of her performance “and totally deserves it,” Morgan said.“She really knows how to work all the different sides of the camera and get that performance out of Amy Adams.”. It’s another example of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar working with some of the greatest living actors – in this case, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton – but it marks his first time writing and directing in English. However, Volk said, “You really couldn’t tell if this was his first or his tenth. It’s got all his signature trademarks, a very theatrical, verbose dialogue that feels so natural and profound.”has been picking up award buzz for distributor Sony Pictures Classic since its debut at the Venice International Film Festival at the beginning of September. Volk said, “That's something that we're very proud of, of being able get some of those award contenders and present them to audiences. It brings them back down from the exclusivity of the prestige titles being tied up in limited releases in other regions, or audiences not getting a chance to see them.”. It's one of the five Texas-made independent films announced as receiving their world premiere at this year's AFF. However, the booking at AFF is not about snagging Oscar-bait, Volk said, but highlighting “artistic and emotional films that showcase visionary filmmakers who are really doing something.” That's why, aside from the big titles, today's announcement includes five world premieres from lesser-known directors. That list includes a movie that caught the AFF programmers completely off-guard:, a mockumentary so perfect that Volk admits he initially didn't realize it was a drama. He said, “It uses the true crime documentary format to explore the rise and fall of your typical suburban community – everything from neighborly quarrels to family barbecues and that one HOA person who is kind of a control freak. But it also speaks to the larger ways we form our communities, and the governing bodies around us, and it's also darkly funny.”celebrates Pflugerville resident Charles Graves – a man who truly understands the spirit of Christmas. Morgan said,"It's a local film with an almost entirely deaf crew featuring a guy who works at the Deaf School in Austin has chosen to be a deaf Santa Claus. Andy and I were looking at each other going, ‘We can’t not show this movie.’”was made and set in Austin's West Campus neighborhood, and is inspired by writer/director Christopher Yates' time as an undergrad at UT-Austin.
