MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 67 on Tuesday, a move aimed at enhancing veteran services in Alabama. The bill, sponsored by Senator Andrew Jo

The bill, sponsored by Senator Andrew Jones and Representative Ed Oliver, seeks to align the governance structure of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs with other cabinet agencies, thereby increasing accountability.

Under the new legislation, the governor can appoint the commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs as a cabinet position, the State Board's role would shift to advisory and oversight, with certain duties transferred to the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, including setting department policy. Ivey also announced the appointment of Brigadier General Jeffrey Newton as the new commissioner of the ADVA. "Brigadier General Newton has earned this important job, and I am more than confident he will work to ensure our state better serves all of our 400,000 veterans," said Governor Ivey. "Alabama’s veterans deserve our very best, and I am grateful to the Alabama Legislature for its resounding support of this important legislation," said Governor Ivey. "We will use this new structure to focus on what matters most – serving those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms – our veterans and their families." Newton, who has a 41-year military career, expressed his gratitude for the appointment. "I am humbled and grateful to be appointed to the Governor’s Cabinet and join her team.
