Mitsubishi Bids Farewell to ASX, Eclipse Cross, and Pajero Sport in Australia

Mitsubishi Australia is discontinuing the ASX, Eclipse Cross, and Pajero Sport SUVs due to upcoming regulatory requirements. The decision, despite the models' strong sales performance, comes down to the cost of re-engineering them to meet the updated ADR standards. Mitsubishi will focus on the Outlander and Triton, with a new Renault-based ASX arriving later in 2025.

Mitsubishi is making significant changes to its Australia n vehicle lineup, discontinuing three models due to upcoming regulatory requirements. The aging ASX , Eclipse Cross (both ICE and PHEV), and Pajero Sport SUVs are being phased out as they fall short of meeting the updated Australia n Design Rules (ADR) slated to take effect from March 1st, 2025.

This decision, despite the trio's strong sales performance in 2024, comes down to the substantial investment needed to re-engineer these models to comply with the new standards. Mitsubishi Australia will be left with just the Outlander SUV and Triton pickup, but a new Renault-based ASX is set to join the lineup later this year. The discontinued SUVs had a significant impact on Mitsubishi's Australian sales. The ASX, Eclipse Cross, and Pajero Sport collectively accounted for over a third of the company's sales in 2024. The ASX alone sold 12,330 units, representing a 34% increase from 2023. The Eclipse Cross found 9,221 buyers (+18%), and the Pajero Sport sold 7,306 units (+31%). These figures highlight the popularity of these models, making their discontinuation a surprising move. However, their age and the substantial cost of bringing them up to the latest safety and emissions standards ultimately led to this decision.Mitsubishi Australia has assured its customers that it is well-prepared for this transition. Sufficient stock of the current generation SUVs will be available throughout 2025. The company is also working closely with its dealer network to ensure a smooth handover. While the future models for the Australian market remain undisclosed, Mitsubishi has confirmed that the second-generation ASX will arrive later in 2025, based on the recently-facelifted Renault Captur. The company's Momentum 2030 plan also includes several new or significantly updated vehicles for the Australian market by the end of the decade, utilizing various powertrains including BEV, PHEV, hybrid, and ICE.
