The director of the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 just revealed a first look at Hiccup's fire sword from the upcoming film.

Director Dean DeBlois took to Instagram to announce that production on How to Train Your Dragon 2 has ended after 81 days of principal photography.

"Onto post production. See you in June of '27!

" he added. The filmmaker included an image that shows a close-up shot of Hiccup holding on to the hilt of his fire sword. In the comments section, cast member Nick Frost, who plays Gobber, replied,"We did it!!!

" and added three heart-eye emojis. Star Mason Thames, who plays protagonist Hiccup in the live-action films, shared DeBlois' post on his Instagram Story and added the caption,"I can't wait for y'all to see what we did here.

" Hiccup's fire sword, called Inferno, was first introduced in the original animated version of How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 2014 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019. In the first sequel, he uses the sword to save Stormfly and to ignite the Zippleback gas cannisters.

Meanwhile, the threequel opens dramatically, with Hiccup lighting up the sword while mist surrounds him; later, he uses Inferno to create an explosion with one of Astrid's gas cannisters. Filming for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 got underway on January 26, 2026, with DeBlois announcing the major development on social media and sharing the movie's logo on a film slate.

DeBlois has been a part of the popular fantasy film franchise since the very beginning, when he and Chris Sanders co-directed and co-wrote the first animated adaptation of author Cressida Cowell's children's book series How to Train Your Dragon. He then took over sole directing and screenwriting duties for the two sequels in the trilogy, which collectively grossed over $1.6 billion at the box office.

The franchise's reach included the small screen, where the TV shows DreamWorks Dragons, DreamWorks Dragons: Rescue Riders, and DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms aired from 2012 to 2023. Just two years later, Universal Pictures brought How to Train Your Dragon back to the big screen with a live-action remake that earned $636 million and a Certified Fresh score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics.

The film retold the story of Hiccup, who comes from a line of Vikings that fear dragons. However, when the teenager discovers the dragon Toothless, the two begin a journey together that changes the village of Berk forever.
