Romero was reportedly wearing ballistic armor under camouflage and carrying three concealable firearms when he was arrested.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska State Troopers Criminal Suppression Unit mobilized on Thursday to hunt down a man who fled parole after doing time for murder, robbery and assault convictions. 36-year-old Fairbanks resident, George Romero Jr.
was released from prison under supervised parole conditions. However, a warrant was issued for his re-arrest on June 4 after parole officers reported that he was actively avoiding contact and was armed. “When he was absconding from parole we had received information that he was in possession of a firearm,” related Alaska State Trooper Trevor Norris. “Him being a felon, that was obviously a concern to us.” CSU worked together with the Fairbanks Area Narcotics Team and law enforcement helicopter Helo-2 to locate Romero, and the Northern Swat Team stood by to help make the arrest. “Just immediately prior to us taking him into custody he was seen putting on a camouflage poncho and securing a large duffel bag that later turned out to contain camping materials,” Norris said. Romero then headed out into a swampy area of woods off of Goldstream Road, as Helo-2 traced his location and relayed it to teams on the ground. “When we confronted Romero at first he was compliant,” Norris said. “We walked him back towards us. When we asked him to drop down to his knees so we could place him in handcuffs he stood there and was not compliant with commands for a little while. He then ultimately did drop to the ground and we were able to secure him in handcuffs. At that point we located two pistols on his person as well as a ballistic vest and soft ballistic plates.” “It looked to me like he was getting ready to hide out and be on the run for the long haul,” Norris added. In addition to absconding from parole, Romero is being charged with weapons misconduct for being a felon in possession of concealable firearms. “We’re not going to tolerate armed and dangerous people running loose in the community,” Norris said.
