) - Officials with the Colbert County EMA confirmed Abbie Baptist Church in Leighton caught fire on Sunday morning.Firefighters from nine volunteer fire departments used at least 17,000 gallons of water to extinguish what was left of the church on Palm Sunday.
Brick-Hatton Fire Chief Brian Romans said the fire had already reached the roof of the sanctuary when personnel first arrived just after 1 a.m. “When we got on scene, the church was fully involved, so we knew we were going to have to surround the building and drown it with as much water as possible,” Chief Romans said. Twenty firefighters from Brick-Hatton, Leighton, White Oak, Nitrate City, LaGrange, Colbert Heights, Spring Valley, Littleville, and Town Creek worked the scene until 5 a.m.Chief Romans said he talked with a deacon of the church who told him there is a person who comes by the church each Saturday to make sure it is clean and ready for Sunday services. The church remains locked at all times unless there are services.
