Two people were found dead Monday after a fire at a residence in Bethel, authorities said.

Bethel police and fire crews responded about 4:30 p.m. to the Trailer Court area after reports of a structure fire, according to a press release from the Bethel Police Department. When responders arrived, they tried to enter the home to battle the fire and evacuate anyone inside, but were unable to get in because of intense heat, heavy smoke and flames, the release said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and kept it from spreading to nearby residences. After the fire was brought under control, a search of the home led to the discovery of two bodies inside, police said. The Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and is expected to assist with the investigation and with identifying the victims. Authorities did not release the names of the dead, saying identification was still pending and next of kin had not yet been notified.U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific performs at Eagle River High School amid proposed fine arts cutsDunleavy: Lawmaker changes to LNG property tax bill puts gas line ‘at risk’
