ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Service members trekked through Six Mile Lake in April, taking position during the 673rd Security Forces Squadron’s Arctic Combat Development Course. The training focuses on fighting in the Arctic and preparing bodies for Alaska’s sometimes unforgiving weather.

The course comes as Alaska, according to the U.S. Air Force, experienced a record-breaking cold for March. During the training, service members faced temperatures as low as negative 26-degrees. “This training is not like any other training that a member will seek,” Master Sgt. Scott Shreve, U.S. Air Force, said. “When it comes to the Arctic environment, it is extremely cold, it’s extremely difficult to survive.” The course prepares service members to operate in any part of the state, from the lowlands to the tundra. According to the U.S. Air Force, service members trained using snow machines and skis to get around. The training covers maintaining fires in extreme cold, consuming more calories and wearing proper gear. Service members also focus on air and ground-based defense for combat operations and defensive positions. “So being out here and training in this environment is crucial, especially for those that work in the Arctic realm,” Shreve said.“Now they got to sustain out in this cold environment and survive in the cold environment,” Shreve said. “The sustainability ultimately is what it comes down to.”Alaska House budget panel advances $3,800 PFD in draft budgetPolice warn Alaskans of new widespread text scamFish and Game ask people to give moose some space as reports of charges increase
