As the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum transitions to their new location at the old K-Mart building at 3121 Airport Way, a push to complete the preparations for completion is seeing pressure as tourist season rolls in.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - As the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum transitions to their new location at the old K-Mart building at 3121 Airport Way , pressure to complete the move is mounting as tourist season rolls in.to combine with the Pioneer Air Museum in 2024, Fountainhead Development began the process of moving their auto museum to the new location.
It all comes as the museum celebrates 40 years of operations.
“We started this project during COVID, working with the Pioneer Aviation Museum and talking about consolidating the two activities under one roof,” said Tim Cerny, the president of Fountainhead Development. The new facility which will be expanded to 90,000 square feet will provide space for exhibits about the auto industry, aviation and fashion.
“We’ve decided to stick with the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum logo and name because we spent 20 years getting recognized nationally and internationally for what we do in Fairbanks, Alaska. ” The evolution of the museum is important to Cerny for people to “Come and see what early transportation was like in Fairbanks, and not just Fairbanks, but also the rest of the United States.
”“What was happening from this incredibly dynamic period, from the late 1890s to World War II... that’s what interests us the most,” he said. With the new space, Cerny said they’ll be able to display nearly all of their automobiles — including motorcycles and early snowmachines — which is a fleet of about 135 vehicles. With the addition of aviation, they plan to open with 5 assembled planes and plan to expand to 8 or 9.
In addition to expanding exhibits, the new facility will also allow a behind the scenes view of the curation process which was something the old facility provided in limitation.
“The ability to look behind the scenes, we learned over the last 20 years in our existing location, is one of people’s favorite activities within the museum,” Cerny said. “I think there’s only three in our collection that we don’t operate and so they require, you know, regular attention and to keep them in that kind of condition and to be able to watch what it takes, even if it’s, you know, through a window.
”“We were shooting for June 1,” Cerny said. However, that “may get pushed to like June 15th, and our opening may be a little bit soft. ” Once things are fully operational however, the expanded events space will also allow for travelling exhibits and presentations.
