$1,500 PFD moves to Senate with Senate Majority signaling another decrease

After three long days of debate on the operating budget, the House passed the budget and with it, a $1,500 Permanent Fund Dividend.

of debate on the operating budget, the House passed the budget and with it, a $1,500 permanent fund dividend. The final vote was 21-19, exactly along party lines. On the third day of debate, the House scrutinized just how much they thought the dividend should be valued at with the minority fighting for a chance at a vote for a $3,800 PFD . “This budget is lacking clear priorities from my district,” Rep. Sarah Vance , R- Homer , said on the floor Monday. “Instead of putting money directly into the economy of each of our districts — where our constituents could have had the increased money to pay for the rising fuel costs to heat their homes, to put gas in their tanks to get to school — we instead chose to transfer $1.4 billion into the fund that pays for more government spending in the future.”

“Until and unless the majority of this body and the other body raise about half dollars in annual revenue, discussion of a $3,800 mega PFD is a total fantasy,” House Majority Whip Zack Fields, D-Anchorage, told the chamber. “So we should get that out of the way and move on with a reality-based discussion.”out of the state’s savings account, the constitutional budget reserve. Neither caucus in the House nor the Senate has command over that many lawmakers.was passed to cut out the contingency language from the operating budget and allocate over $992 million toward dividends. Rep. Calvin Schrage, NA-Anchorage, said that equates to about a $1,500 dividend. “Personally, it’s higher than I would like to see,” Schrage said walking out of the chambers Friday. “I recognize there’s a lot of need for us to provide direct cash support to Alaskans ... there’s a lot of needs out there and unfortunately the dividend is a very costly state spending program.”

It’s sentiments like Schrage’s that echo over in the senior chamber, with senators standing by to touch up the bill.as debate continued in the House. “We don’t know what that bill’s gonna look like until it gets the final vote and we’ll take it under advisement as they send it over.” Across the aisle, Senate Minority Leader Mike Cronk, R-Tok/Northway, said the $3,800 PFD was unrealistic. “I love a PFD,” he told Alaska’s News Source. “My constituents can use a PFD, but the reality is we have a big state and it does cost a lot to do what we do.”
