Dothan United showcases their cardiac resilience to beat Montgomery United in a 2-1 thriller, with late highlights including a stunning goal by Tito Porter.

DOTHAN, Ala. - Dothan United proved themselves to be cardiac kids in their first taste of 2026 league play on Saturday night.

The Dragons, fresh off a pair of high scoring friendly wins to begin their third campaign in team history, were dealt a much more complicated challenge against USL League 2 South Central Division foe and state rival Montgomery United, but some second half heroics proved to be just what was needed for the good guys to come away with a 2-1 victory. DUSC and the home fans packed into Rip Hewes Stadium were dealt an early blow in this matchup, with the capital city crew capitalizing early in this contest with a goal from Geraldo Lopez to get out to a 1-0 lead at the 16 minute mark.

From there, it was a case of tough defenses and solid goalkeeping from both sides, the nets being highlighted as a brotherly battle between Dothan’s Yago Darub and Montgomery’s Victor Darub. From that struggle came no more goals for over an hour of game time, with Montgomery United taking their one goal lead into halftime and through a good portion of the second 45 minutes.

Dothan would finally break onto the board in the 77th minute, as Josh Hallenberger pulled enough of the defense to the right side of the field and sent in a solid cross into the box that perfectly found the thigh of Oskar Kaufmann, who sent it past the keeper to tie things up 1-1.

But the moment of the night came just as the clock ticked over past the 90 minutes of regulation and into stoppage time, as after getting the ball back off a steal and getting into the positive half of the field, Ryan Holmes got a great pass out to Tito Porter, who dribbled it into the front right corner of the box and fired off a beautiful shot that sailed into the net and erupted The Rip with celebration as the Dragons took their first lead of the game in dramatic fashion.

The Dothan United defense would hold steady through a long period of extra time, and the final whistle’s blow meant the Dragons secured victory and three all-important points to open division play, putting them at 3-0 overall on the year and 1-0 in USL2 South Central Division play. The three points puts DUSC presently at second place in the division standings, with Columbus United sitting atop early on with a 1-0-1 record after a 2-1 win over Apotheos FC last week and a 1-1 tie against the same team on Saturday night.

Dothan United will take their first road trip of the season next weekend, when they travel out to Conyers, Georgia for a league battle with East Atlanta FC. The action from RYSA Soccer Complex will get underway at 6:30 p.m. central time on Saturday, May 23. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
