Crews this month will begin fixing Highway 1 over three weekends to minimize weekday commuters’ disruptions
The California Department of Transportation will close portions of 19th Avenue on three consecutive weekends starting this month as part of a project that will fill potholes, repave lanes and repair deteriorating pavement.
Caltrans crews will begin work April 24 on the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 1 between Lincoln Way and Holloway Avenue. State transportation officials say the project will maintain street safety and improve ride quality for travelers. Transportation officials said working on the weekends will shorten the length of the project and reduce disruptions for weekday commuters. The project was originally planned to begin in the summer, but a Caltrans spokesperson said in a statement that “organizing the work in three weekend closures will reduce impact on the public from 40 to nine days.” Crews completed the first part of their work in January, focusing on repaving from Sloat Boulevard to Lincoln Way. Starting April 24 at 7 a.m. until April 27 at 5 a.m., all but one of 19th Avenue’s northbound lanes will be closed from Sloat Boulevard to Lincoln Avenue. The same closure will go into effect for the southbound lanes from May 8 until May 11.As part of the project’s second phase, the Park Presidio Boulevard and California Street intersection will be repaved later this summer. One lane will remain open in each direction during construction for private vehicles, public transportation and first responders. Parking on 19th Avenue will be restricted during the closures, but Caltrans said private vehicles will be able to park on side streets. While focusing on infrastructure improvements, Caltrans said the repaving project will also modernize the sensors placed on the road that detect how many vehicles are traveling and how fast they are going at a given time.In a Q&A, SF Pride President Joshua Smith emphasizes that Pride this year will be an event supporting all communities feeling targeted by the Trump administrationThe Mayor's Office said eliminating 500 positions will save $100 million in annual spendingSix local chefs are competing in a coast-to-coast celebration and serving up diners one-of-a-kind dishes throughout April City officials said they worked with Caltrans to ensure that the construction times did not interfere with major events. In a video shared last week on social media, Mayor Daniel Lurie said his office has “been pushing hard on Caltrans’ project.” District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong, who represents the Sunset district on the Board of Supervisors, said that 19th Avenue is “such a critical corridor” for west-side residents, which is “why we made this big push to limit the construction time.” In addition to minimizing traffic and transit disruptions, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency worked with Caltrans, the Mayor’s Office and community stakeholders in an effort to minimize noise pollution in surrounding neighborhoods. During the final weekend closure, pavement removal will take place from Sloat Boulevard to Holloway Avenue at night so as to not disrupt Stonestown Galleria shoppers over Memorial Day weekend. In a statement, Wong said the approach is “a strong example of how coordination and community feedback can lead to better outcomes.” SFMTA Director of Communications Parisa Safarzadeh said Muni’s 28 19th Avenue and 28 Rapid 19th Avenue lines “will see some minor impacts but will run.” Safarzadeh said the agency is planning to run additional buses on the route during the closures to help affected residents get to their respective destinations. Local and state transportation officials encouraged travelers to use alternate routes to move around The City. Alternate routes during the first weekend’s closure include Junipero Serra Boulevard and Brotherhood Way. State transportation officials are expected to announce additional detours in the coming weeks. San Francisco Public Works Director of Policy and Communications Rachel Gordon said her crew will “help amplify the communications around the closures.” Once work commences, Caltrans said residents can keep up with traffic updates by visiting the 511 and Caltrans QuickMap websites.
