John Alston, who began the chorus with just seven children in 1994, has guided nearly 1,000 young singers over the years.
Wednesday, May 20, 2026 9:39PMAfter more than three decades leading the Chester Children's Chorus, longtime director John Alston took his final bow over the weekend, marking the end of an era for the program he founded and helped shape since 1994.
Alston, who began the chorus with just seven children, guided nearly 1,000 young singers over the years. The program also expanded beyond music, offering individualized math instruction led by Swarthmore College students. Alumni have gone on to attend universities including Harvard, Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania.
"I'm proud. It's wonderful to know that you've done a small piece of what the world needs to be better," Alston said during his final performance. Sean Tripline, who has served with the choir for 12 years and most recently worked as assistant music director, will take over leadership of the program. He said he never expected to step into the role until a quiet conversation with Alston changed his perspective.
"I had a conversation with Dr. Alston after a concert, and we were just casually talking about his retirement," Tripline said. "And then he quietly said, 'You know, Sean, you could do this too. ' And, when he said it, you know, something, you know, resonated in me. ""You have big shoes to fill," he recalled being told.
"He says that I'm taking my shoes with me, and that Sean has his own shoes. So that's the mentality I have going into this role," he said. As for Alston, he said he plans to rest, spend time with his son and possibly return to college teaching.
