Oakland city leaders are shedding more light on a crash that killed three people Saturday night and injured several others in East Oakland after a speeding vehicle plowed into a group of people standing on a sidewalk.
Police say the 17-year-old driver was going more than 50 miles an hour. Oakland city leaders are shedding more light on a crash that killed three people Saturday night and injured several others in East Oakland after a speeding vehicle plowed into a group of people standing on a sidewalk.
The crash happened at 85th Avenue and International Boulevard. The motive is still unclear. But the police chief says this was clearly a case of reckless driving. Surveillance video captures the horrific crash Sunday night in East Oakland.
More video captured from a different angle with images a camera at Belle Johnson's laundromat, The Wash Spot. You can see a speeding black SUV barreling down the sidewalk and the driver running out after the collision.
"This is the youngster that hit," said Johnson. "I think he was in shock when he realized what he did and he started running. " Police said a driver speeding on 85th Avenue, turned on International Boulevard and plowed into a parked car and then into crowds of people standing outside East Bay Market and Liquor store. The chief described what happened moments before the driver crashed into people.
"He had struck other vehicles prior to coming up to that intersection. Again, I am not a traffic investigator, but it appears that may have been through operator error. Speed is a factor. We do know that is one of the contributing issues that's at play here," said Chief James Beere with Oakland Police Department.
Johnson was friends with many of the people who were killed and injured.
"It's very devastating. It just hurts my heart," said Johnson.
"I got to know many of them very well because they always came to a place they felt was theirs. "Another person killed --was Robert Dixon, Jr, known as "O.G. Frog.
" He was a community advocate. "Unfortunately, it was very difficult to watch to know people are driving out here like that and taking innocent lives and ruining families. My Popo was one of the main people to be in the community," said Dixon.
"I also want to thank members of the community whose very quick actions Saturday evening to ensure the driver did not leave the scene before officers arrived," said Lee. On Monday night, there's also a tribute for victim Robert Dixon, Jr. aka "Frog.
" It starts at 7 p.m. at the Sports Page Bar in East Oakland.
