NEWTOWN SQUARE Pa. -- Spectators packed Aronimink Golf Club on a hot but picturesque Sunday to watch the final round of the PGA Championship, and witness English golfer Aaron Rai claim victory.
For fans, it was a the chance to see some of the sport's biggest names compete in the Philadelphia region's first major golf championship since 2013.
"We found this great spot on hole 1 and I got a couple balls from Patrick Cantlay, Scottie, and Jordan Spieth so that was great," said Declan Monti of Mickleton, N.J. "Amazing, great experience. I couldn't have asked for anything better - the weather's been beautiful, a little hot but overall - we've gotten to see every single player in action, live," Sharon Dills of Burlington said.
"We watched Justin Rose and McIlroy on the 9th hole. It was amazing, it was really cool," said Chris Dicrecchio of Broomall. While many attendees were local, others traveled hours to be part of the championship atmosphere. Ali Florian of Washington, D.C.
, said, "One of our best friends is a member here at Aronimink and he had us out for the weekend, came here Saturday and Sunday and it's been an awesome experience.
" Blake Lawrence of Connecticut said he was surprised by how close spectators could get to the action. "I didn't realize we were gonna be able to walk the course as much as we have," he said, calling it "pretty incredible. " Fans also brought a bit of Philadelphia flavor to the celebration, especially after Rai declared he had a new favorite NFL team. The crowd immediately responded with an "E-A-G-L-E-S" chant.
